Broward Technical Colleges Students Earn the Most Industry Certifications in the State

Monday, June 13, 2016

BCPS Ranks First in State for Performance Incentive Funding by the Florida Department of Educationtechnical colleges logo

Students attending Broward Technical Colleges are earning the most industry certifications across the state. This school year, students at Atlantic Technical College, McFatter Technical College and Sheridan Technical College earned industry certifications in 48 tested areas, resulting in the colleges receiving $644,562 from the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) Performance Incentive Funding (PIF). Funds will be used to continue updating technology and equipment to meet industry standards.

“This top ranking affirms that Broward County Public Schools has created programs committed to delivering high quality instruction,” said Superintendent Robert W. Runcie. “Our technical colleges are doing whatever it takes to assure our students receive the highest quality education, and that they are on the right path to succeed in college and career.”
Receiving this first place ranking is part of the postsecondary Florida Career and Professional Education (CAPE) Act funding list, under the FLDOE.~The Florida CAPE Act was created to provide a statewide planning partnership between business and education communities, to expand and retain high-value industry, and sustain a vibrant state economy.

Based on current industry standards, these exams and certifications are universally recognized throughout the United States marketplace. Contributing to the success and ranking of technical colleges, students are reimbursed for the cost of their exam(s) when successfully passed.

The District’s three technical colleges offer more than 60 career programs, with day and evening classes, and online options. Major subject areas include: architecture and construction; barbering; cosmetology and spa services; business management and administration; communication arts; culinary arts; education and training; fire academy; health science and medical technology; information technology; manufacturing; marketing and transportation; and logistics. School Board Decision Regarding 2015/16 Contract with Broward Teachers Union

Monday, June 27, 2016

Today, Monday, June 27, 2016, a Legislative Hearing was held between the School Board of Broward County, Florida, and the Union, to resolve the two final items remaining in the contract negotiations for the 2015/16 school year, following an impasse declared by the Union. This included:

  • Pay for Teachers on Levels T and U: The District rejected the Special Magistrate’s recommendation to provide a one-time, non-recurring bonus of $500 to teachers on Levels T and U. The District’s position was to double the increase to $1,000 and add this funding to teachers’ salaries, so that it becomes part of teachers’ recurring base salary.

The School Board voted to approve a 2.51% raise for all teachers, including teachers on Levels T and U, for the 2015/16 school year.

  • Sixth Period Supplement: The District rejected the Special Magistrate’s recommendation to maintain the sixth period supplement beyond the 2015/16 school year. The District’s position was that it was fundamentally unfair to the vast majority of high school teachers who already voted during the 2015/16 school year to move to a 4×4 A/B schedule, after being advised by District and Union representatives that the supplement would expire at the end of the 2015/16 school year.

The School Board voted to reject the special magistrate’s recommendation regarding the sixth period supplement and clarified that the sixth period supplement ends at the conclusion of the 2015/16 school year. The School Board agreed that there will be on-going discussions moving forward regarding teacher compensation.

As part of the required legislative process, the terms of the 2015/16 contract will be presented to members of the Collective Bargaining Unit for ratification, at a date, time and location to be determined by the Union. If ratified, the District will work to provide the salary increases, retroactive to the start of the 2015/16 school year, as quickly as possible. The new terms will also be in effect for the 2016/17 school year.

The District will continue to provide information regarding any next steps involving the 2015/16 contract with the BTU as it becomes available.

State Releases School and District Grades for the 2015/16 School Year

Friday, July 08, 2016

Today, the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) released elementary, middle and high school grades for the 2015/16 school year.

Highlights of the 2016 school grades include the following:

  • Similar to the trends seen among the five largest Florida school districts, Broward decreased the proportion of “A” grades and increased the proportions of “B,” “C,” and “D” grades.
  • However, 36 (17%) of Broward’s traditional schools maintained an “A” grade from 2014/15 to 2015/16 and one school, Discovery Elementary School, increased from a “B” to an “A.”
  • Seven schools increased by two letter grades. Sanders Park Elementary increased to a “B” while Endeavour Primary Learning Center, Larkdale Elementary School, Morrow Elementary School, North Fork Elementary School, Plantation Elementary School and Sunland Park Academy all improved to a “C.”
  • Among the traditional schools, the number and percent of “F” grades decreased from 22 (10%) to 8 (4%).
  • Overall, Broward earned a District grade of “B” for the third year in a row.

“Today’s grades release serves as a new baseline for school districts across Florida. Overall, we know our students are achieving academically, and we acknowledge that there is still more work to be done,” said Superintendent Robert W. Runcie. “I commend the hard work of our students, teachers, school leaders and all staff in our District. We’ll continue to work together to ensure our students have the skills for long-term success.”

The 2015/16 school grades were computed following the rules adopted by the Florida Board of Education at its January 6, 2016, meeting. This year’s school grades mark the first time that the calculations were conducted using the full set of criteria as adopted at that meeting. Specifically, learning gains were included in the 2015/16 school grades. For additional information on school grades, visit the Florida Department of Education website at http://schoolgrades.fldoe.org.
