News Conference on Approval of Secure the Next Generation ½ Mill Referendum

Today, Wednesday, August 29, 2018, Broward County School Board members, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) Superintendent Robert W. Runcie and the Broward Teachers Union (BTU) held a news conference to thank the Broward community for its support of the Secure the Next Generation Referendum.

The Secure the Next Generation ½ mill Referendum was approved by Broward voters during the August 28 primary election. The funds generated from the referendum will be available to the District beginning in the 2019/20 school year, and will provide:

  • Increased compensation for teachers and school-related staff
  • Additional school security staff at schools
  • Essential programs for students, such as guidance counselors and behavior specialists

“Thank you to all of our parents, students, teachers, staff and community members for supporting the Secure the Next Generation ½ mill referendum,” said Superintendent Runcie. “Following last year’s tragedy, we remain focused on our shared recovery and healing. The approval of the referendum is a testament to our community’s commitment to ensuring our schools are safe, our teachers and school-related staff receive better compensation, and our commitment to doing everything we can to support the well-being of our students.”
