Support Debate!

Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) Debate Initiative is excited to host its fourth annual Speaking for the Future luncheon. The Debate Initiative is a partnership between local businesses and school-based debate programs, which focuses on supporting and increasing students’ participation in debate.

During the Speaking for the Future luncheon, BCPS debate students will showcase their skills through a variety of performances, debates and speeches. The students represent Peters Elementary School, Walker Elementary School, Ramblewood Middle School, Plantation Middle School, Fort Lauderdale High School and Cypress Bay High School.

The Speaking for the Future luncheon takes place on Thursday, November 1, 2018, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Porter Riverview Ballroom, and begins at 11:30 a.m.  Media are invited to cover this event.

For information on Speaking for the Future luncheon tickets, visit https://www.eventbrite.com/e/speaking-for-the-future-broward-debate-initiative-annual-luncheon-tickets-50365139488.  All proceeds from Speaking for the Future luncheon are used to support students in their competitive debate endeavors by offsetting costs, such as transportation to and from debate tournaments, supplies, competition entry fees and out-of-county field trips.

BCPS is proud to offer the largest debate program in the world. Every District middle and high school, 70 elementary schools and three alternative schools now offer debate, with approximately 15,000 students participating. Through debate, students learn research, logic, organization of ideas and language skills. Debate also helps students build their self-esteem and become engaged in world events and is shown to have a positive impact on student achievement.

The Debate Initiative’s Host Committee includes Broward County School Board Member Laurie Rich Levinson, former United States Senator George S. LeMieux, Florida Bar Association Past President Eugene Pettis and Broward County State Attorney Michael Satz.

While the Speaking for the Future luncheon serves as a major fundraiser for the Debate Initiative, opportunities exist throughout the school year to donate funding or professional attire, which is provided to students to wear at competitions. To learn more, visit browardschools.com/debate.
