Broward County School Board Votes to Retain Superintendent Robert W. Runcie

The School Board of Broward County, Florida, provided a resounding vote of confidence today by voting to retain Robert W. Runcie as Superintendent of Broward County Public Schools. It was clear from the 6 – 3 vote that the School Board wants Superintendent Runcie to continue to lead the nation’s sixth largest school district, with more than 271,000 students in 234 schools.

The past year has been challenging for the Broward County community, as it works to healfrom the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, 2018, where 14 students and three school employees lost their lives. Seventeen more were injured and thousands are still suffering from the trauma.

“I want to thank the School Board for its support. My focus has been and remains on working every day to make our schools safer for our students, faculty and staff,” said Superintendent Runcie. “Now, it is time to come together as a community to ensure all of our schools across the District are safe and secure. Safety in all of our schools will always be our number one priority. At the same time, we must continue to fulfill our core mission of providing a quality education, in safe environments, to prepare our students to succeed in tomorrow’s world.”

Superintendent Runcie joined Broward County Public Schools in 2011. During the past eight years he has been credited with improving academic performance, improving college and career readiness, increasing the use of technology, maximizing operational efficiencies, and growing the nation’s largest debate program. In 2016, Superintendent Runcie was selected Florida Superintendent of the Year.

Florida High Court Approves Request for Grand Jury Probe of School Safety

News in Brief

The Florida supreme court has ordered a statewide grand jury with a broad mandate to investigate school safety.

In addition, the panel will investigate whether school districts or other agencies fraudulently accepted state school safety money, then failed to act, and whether school officials illegally underreported criminal incidents to the state.

The court acted in response to a Feb. 13 request from Gov. Ron DeSantis, who asked for the grand jury the day before the one-year anniversary of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre.

The focus of the grand jury’s work is broad, but its intent is clear. In the aftermath of the Stoneman Douglas massacre, in which 17 people were killed and 17 injured, family members of those killed have pushed for more accountability than they say has been shown by the Broward County school board and Superintendent Robert Runcie.
