Updated Timeline for the Clear Backpacks and Bags Initiative for the 2023/24 School Year 

The Broward County School Board and Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) Interim Superintendent invite students, parents, staff and community members to join a School Safety Town Hall regarding the proposed clear backpacks and bags initiative on school campuses beginning in the 2023/24 school year.   

The School Safety Town Hall takes place on Monday, June 12, 2023, at Plantation High School, 6901 N.W. 16th Street, Plantation, Florida 33313. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting starts promptly at 6 p.m. The event will be livestreamed. The public can share questions or feedback on Twitter @browardschools. 

The purpose of this initiative is to add an additional layer of security across our District for our students, staff and faculty.   

The following School Board Workshop and Special School Board Meeting will take place following the School Safety Town Hall:  

Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at 9 a.m.

Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at 8 a.m

BCPS Superintendent Search Semi-Finalists Provide Video Responses to Pre-Determined Questions

The seven semi-finalists in the School Board of Broward County’s national search for Broward County Public Schools permanent Superintendent have completed the next step in the application process. Thursday, May 25, was the deadline for candidates to submit a video recording responding to three pre-determined questions. The candidate’s videos, as well as their resumes and a complete timeline of the superintendent search process, are available on the District’s website, browardschools.com/supersearch. 

All the candidates were provided with the same questions and had three minutes to respond to each. The videos are being shared with School Board members, who will select the top finalists at a Special School Board Meeting on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at 8 a.m.

The town hall provides the community the opportunity to share feedback on important security initiatives, including the use of clear backpacks and bags beginning in the 2023/24 school year, implementing a unified dress code at schools and the installation of metal detectors.

The community’s feedback will inform the School Board’s vote on the use of clear backpacks, scheduled to take place during the Regular School Board Meeting on Tuesday, June 13, 2023.

As we near the end of the 2022/23 school year and summer approaches, Broward County Public Schools staff and the Parent and Community Involvement Task Force are presenting Parent University – FAST Testing and the 2023 Summer Experience. The virtual event takes place Monday, May 22 at 6:30 p.m. 

The 2022/23 school year is the first year students participated in the Florida Assessment For Student Thinking (FAST). Now that the testing is complete, District staff will explain what the scores mean and how they are used for promotion, placement and to offer support to students

For students eligible to attend the 2023 Summer Experience, staff will also share information about what to expect and details about Extended School Year for Exceptional Student Education support, ESOL connections, transportation and food and nutrition services. Representatives from various community organizations will also be on hand with information about summer camps, summer programs and resources to keep students engaged during the summer months.

Global Accessibility Awareness Day

WHAT:
Students from 10 schools across BCPS and their teachers will showcase projects that the students have created as part of the District’s Computer Science (CS) Inclusion initiative. The showcase is a partnership with the University of Florida, funded by Google, to develop a model program to expand computer science opportunities and access to students with disabilities.

WHY:                   
University of Florida researchers and BCPS recently announced the launch of a professional development program for CS and special education teachers called CS Inclusion. The development of the program was supported by a $100,000 grant from Google. The program focuses on providing teachers with strategies and resources to expand access to computer science for students with disabilities, who make up 15% of all K–12 students in public schools nationwide. The goal is to develop CS resources, curriculum and professional development that can be shared and adapted across the globe.

BCPS Announces National Merit $2,500 Scholarship Winners

2023 National Merit Scholarship Winners
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced this year’s National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners. Four Broward County Public Schools seniors were chosen out of more than 15,000 outstanding finalists in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program. 
  

Congratulations to the following students named National Merit $2,500 Scholarship recipients:  

Samantha Carozzi, Cooper City High School
Kaitlyn Drew, Pompano Beach High School 
Sahana Thayagabalu, Cypress Bay High School
Jason Vadnos, Plantation High School  

National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Scholars may use their awards at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university. 

Around 3,800 College-sponsored Merit Scholarship winners will be announced on July 7 and 10. By the conclusion of this year’s competition, more than 7,100 academic champions will have won National Merit Scholarships worth more than $28 million.
