Thurgood Marshall Elementary School Honors Legacy of Civil Rights Icon
Thurgood Marshall Elementary School will celebrate the life and legacy of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall on Friday, August 30, 2024, during the school’s inaugural Thurgood Marshall Day. The celebration begins at 12:45 p.m. and features student scholars presenting their research projects on Justice Marshall’s life and work. Community leaders will also share their reflections on his impact.
Thurgood Marshall Elementary, located at 800 N.W. 13th St. in Fort Lauderdale, was named after the trailblazing civil rights leader, who became the first Black Supreme Court Justice on August 30, 1967. The commemorative celebration is an opportunity for students to learn about the importance of perseverance, justice and the power of education. By honoring Justice Marshall’s memory, the school hopes to inspire students to become active citizens and strive for a more equitable world.
“Justice Marshall was a true champion of equality and justice,” said Principal Angeline Flowers. “His unwavering commitment to civil rights inspired generations of Americans. We are honored to celebrate his life and legacy at our school.”
Thurgood Marshall Elementary School is proud to celebrate the achievements of Justice Marshall and inspire its students to strive for excellence. The school aims to make Thurgood Marshall Day an annual event.
