Hundreds of BCPS Students to Participate in STEM Fest
Fun Feature Story or Photo Opportunity –

WHO:
Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) Students and Families; Representatives from the District’s Title I, Migrant Education and Special Programs Department; The Flying Classroom with Captain Barrington Irving; and Community Partners

WHAT:
Approximately 400 elementary, middle and high school students will participate in the annual STEM Fest. The free event includes hands-on STEM activities, interactive booths, special presentations and STEM-related games using virtual reality flight simulators! Students can also view helicopters, planes and aviation facilities. In addition, students and families take part in engaging STEM projects and meet The Flying Classroom’s Captain Barrington Irving.

 Congratulations to 43 BCPS Schools Named ‘Schools of Excellence’ 

by the Florida State Board of Education

Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is excited to announce 43 schools have been designated as Schools of Excellence for the 2023/24 school year by the Florida State Board of Education. These schools earned this distinction by scoring in the 80th percentile or higher in their grade calculation compared to schools in the same grade group for at least two of the past three school years.

“We are incredibility proud of our Schools of Excellence, BCPS Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn said. “This prestigious recognition honors the hard work, talent and perseverance of our remarkable students, supported by our dedicated teachers and staff. We are inspired by their achievement and look forward to even greater success in the future.”

The Schools of Excellence program was established by the Florida Legislature in 2017 to recognize high-performing schools. Schools that initially qualify for the designation can retain it for up to three years, after which they may renew it. Benefits of the designation include increased autonomy, additional funding and priority in state funding.

Hundreds of BCPS Students Participate in Entrepreneurship Leadership Day

WHO:
Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) Career, Technical, Adult and Community Education (CTACE) Department in collaboration with Network For Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) and Virtual Enterprise (VE); BCPS Students; and Business Partners.            

WHAT:
Around 600 BCPS students participate in the Second Annual Entrepreneurship Leadership Day, engaging directly with local entrepreneurs and business leaders and learning the tools necessary to build a brand.

WHY:
Entrepreneurship Leadership Day exposes students to the entrepreneurial mindset. Fifth – 12th grade students engage with local business owners in breakout sessions on topics, such as Developing a Personal Brand and Rapid Prototyping. Additionally, interested students signed up to participate in the Innovation Team Challenge. More than 30 teams of middle and high school students will be presented with an industry challenge and work alongside business mentors to develop a business plan that offers a solution. Students will present their business plans to a panel of judges and participate in invaluable discussions about the viability of their business model and real-world considerations.

Following Recent Hurricane-Related School Closures

In response to the instructional days missed due to Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton, the Broward County School Board approved revisions to the 2024/25 school year calendar at a Special School Board meeting on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.

To maintain the required instructional time, the following adjustments have been made:

  • January 6, 2025: Changed from an employee planning day to a regular school day for students.
  • The first semester ends on January 9, 2025.
  • January 10, 2025: Changed from a regular school day to an employee planning day.
  • The addition of the severe weather days to include November 25, 26, 2024, and March 31, 2025.

The exam schedules are not impacted by these changes. These revisions ensure compliance with state instructional time requirements while minimizing disruptions to student learning.

BCPS Celebrates Jumpstart’s Read for the Record!®
International Event Aims to Set a Record for the Number of Students Reading the Same Book on the Same Day

Piper Chen Sings Book CoverBroward County Public Schools (BCPS) is excited to participate in Jumpstart’s annual Read for the Record® event, joining millions of people worldwide in reading the book, “Piper Chen Sings.”

As part of Read for the Record®, guest readers – including Broward County School Board members, BCPS Superintendent, Broward Reads leaders, elected officials representing Broward County and local municipalities, local business leaders, and representatives from various organizations – will visit schools across the District.

To kick off the week, BCPS Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn, School Board members and the Florida Panthers will host a pre-Read for the Record event on Monday, October 21, at North Side Elementary School. Media are invited to cover this event and the official Read for the Record events on Thursday, October 24.
